Injury Setbacks and Squad Changes in England’s World Cup Qualifiers
Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi is expected to withdraw from the England squad following an injury sustained during a Europa Conference League match on Thursday. The 25-year-old defender suffered a bruised foot bone in the final moments of the Eagles’ game against AZ Alkmaar, forcing him to leave the pitch on crutches.
Manager Oliver Glasner confirmed that Guehi will not be available for Palace’s upcoming derby against Brighton on Sunday, stating that he “can’t even walk.” This development now raises concerns about his participation in England’s World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Serbia. As a result, Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah is likely to step in as his replacement.
Chalobah, who previously played under Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, was first called up to the national team in May and made his debut in a friendly match against Senegal. However, he was later left out of Tuchel’s squad for September’s qualifiers, with the German manager expressing regret over the decision.
In addition to Guehi’s injury, other players have also been ruled out of the upcoming matches. Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe revealed that Anthony Gordon and Nick Pope will also miss the games due to injuries. Gordon has a minor hip injury, while Pope suffered a concussion during a recent match and required immediate medical attention.
Howe explained: “Nick Pope suffered a concussion and that’s why we took him off. As soon as we were made aware of that, he was withdrawn. He won’t go with England; it’s a 12-day recovery. Anthony Gordon has a minor injury, so he’ll miss England.”
Squad Adjustments and Player Selections
Thomas Tuchel announced several changes to the England squad ahead of their World Cup qualifiers. Five players were omitted from the group that recently defeated Wales and Latvia. These include Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Morgan Gibbs-White, James Trafford, and Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins.
Tuchel explained that Watkins’ absence was due to fitness reasons, while the others were dropped because they had been outperformed since the last international break. He highlighted the importance of competition and performance in selecting the squad.
“Myles, Ruben, and Morgan got out-performed by Nico O’Reilly, Alex Scott, Nick Pope, and Jude in their positions,” Tuchel said. “Myles simply needs more starts, more minutes. Now came a time when Nico O’Reilly had so many starts in that position, so he is slightly ahead for this camp.”
Despite these omissions, Tuchel has chosen to recall Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham, whose absence from the October squad surprised many fans. The 22-year-old was left out due to a shoulder injury, even though he had already returned to action in LaLiga.
Bellingham will now join the squad alongside Phil Foden, who has also earned a recall. Tuchel emphasized the importance of Bellingham’s edge, stating:
“Jude has the edge, which is a very good thing because you need a certain edge to reach the heights that he reached. I think we all need to help him, and to encourage him, or to create an environment that he can live this edge towards the opponent, towards the goals that we are building as a team. That is the main target.”
Competition and Strategic Decisions
Tuchel also addressed his decision to drop certain players last month, explaining that it was more of a message to those currently in the squad rather than a direct statement about the absent players. He noted that competition is essential in maintaining high performance levels.
“The message is now, make sure you keep this thing going and make sure you accelerate the thing because we have something going here,” Tuchel said. “We are super-excited that you are back, but the message is – contribute to it. But yeah, there is competition. And the players will know camp by camp where they compete.”
He added that having multiple players in similar positions can create challenges. “If you use the example that we bring four number-10s in. Because all four individually deserve to be in camp. And then we have four on the number-10 position but only one left-winger, for example. This does not make sense.”
