Nnadozie Shares Nkwocha’s Influence

Chiamaka Nnadozie’s Journey and Inspirations

Chiamaka Nnadozie, the goalkeeper for the Super Falcons, has shared how her journey in football was shaped by the legacy of a legendary Nigerian striker. During an interview with Sky Sports Football, Nnadozie revealed that Perpetua Nkwocha, a former Nigerian forward, was a major inspiration for her as she grew up.

Nnadozie, who plays for Brighton, spoke about her early days in football. She admitted that while she played the sport, she wasn’t really a fan and didn’t watch matches regularly. However, Nkwocha’s influence was significant.

“It was Perpetua Nkwocha, the former Nigerian striker,” Nnadozie said. “To be honest, when I was growing up, I wasn’t really a football fan. I was playing football, but I didn’t even watch matches. I was just playing for the love, and I never knew I was going to be here.”

Pre-Match Rituals and Music

In addition to her inspirations, Nnadozie also discussed her pre-match activities. Unlike some players who follow strict rituals, she keeps things simple.

“I don’t really have a serious pre-match ritual. I just try to stay happy. Talk to some important people in my life. I just play my music; I love Afrobeats. I listen to Burna Boy, Tems, and Wizkid. I listen to their songs a lot. A lot of girls in the team also listen to Tems, especially.”

Her love for music is evident, and it seems to be a key part of her preparation before games.

The Legacy of Perpetua Nkwocha

Perpetua Nkwocha, now 49, was a dominant force in the Super Falcons’ attack from 1999 to 2015. She scored 80 goals for Nigeria and won five WAFCON titles in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, and 2014. Her achievements were recognized with multiple awards, including being named African Women’s Footballer of the Year in 2004, 2005, 2010, and 2011.

By the time Nnadozie joined the Super Falcons in 2018, Nkwocha had already retired. However, her impact on women’s football in Africa remains significant.

Nnadozie’s Impact on Goalkeeping

Just as Nkwocha raised the bar for women strikers in Africa, Nnadozie is making her mark between the sticks. Her performances at both the club and international levels have been impressive.

Nnadozie recently moved to Brighton after a successful five-year stint with Paris FC, where she helped the team win their first title in nearly 20 years. At the club level, her contributions have been crucial.

On the international stage, Nnadozie played a vital role in the Super Falcons’ 10th WAFCON triumph in Morocco earlier this year. She conceded only twice from open play during the tournament.

Recognition and Future Goals

Nnadozie has already won the CAF Women’s Goalkeeper award twice, and there is a strong possibility that she could add a third consecutive honor when the 2025 CAF Awards are held in Morocco by December.

Her journey from a young player to a top goalkeeper reflects her dedication and passion for the game. With her continued success, Nnadozie is setting a new standard for goalkeepers in African football.
