Former Kano State governor and senator for Kano Central in the 9th National Assembly, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has made it clear that his journey in politics is far from over. During an interactive session with journalists in Kano, as part of celebrations marking his 70th birthday, he expressed his determination to remain actively involved in the political arena for the rest of his life.
Shekarau, known for his faith-based approach to governance, emphasized that politics is not just a profession for him but a form of worship and service to humanity. He stated, “My politics is my religion, and my religion is my politics.” This philosophy has guided his actions throughout his career, reinforcing his belief that participating in the process of producing credible and trustworthy leaders is a religious duty in Islam.
He clarified that his motivation for entering politics was never driven by personal ambition. Instead, it stemmed from a desire to help nurture just and competent leadership that serves the people faithfully. “So long as I have the strength to contribute in any form, I will continue to do so. Politics, for me, is not a career that ends; it is a lifelong responsibility,” he added.
A Legacy of Faith and Discipline
Despite facing challenges and disappointments during his political journey, Shekarau expressed no regrets. He acknowledged that he had always accepted every outcome as the will of Allah. “Whatever comes my way, I take it as Allah’s decision. Even when I fail to achieve what I desire, I believe it is because Allah has chosen what is best for me. Regret only comes when one fails to appreciate Allah’s wisdom,” he said.
His early political involvement began during his student days in the 1980s. Shekarau recalled contesting and winning several leadership positions within teachers’ unions and educational associations. “Elections are not new to me. I started contesting in 1982, and by 1988, I was National President of the Police Schools in Nigeria, overseeing more than 8,000 schools. That experience shaped my confidence in leadership and service,” he shared.
As the first politician to defeat a sitting governor in Kano State, Shekarau took pride in his electoral victories, which he attributed to faith, discipline, and the trust of the people. His tenure as governor from 2003 to 2011 marked a significant chapter in his career, leaving a lasting impact on the state.
Concerns About the Current Political Climate
Shekarau expressed concerns about the current political atmosphere in Nigeria. He urged opposition parties to form a united front to strengthen the nation’s democracy. “A united opposition can create a more robust political environment that holds leaders accountable and ensures transparency,” he suggested.
Commenting on the state of the nation, he acknowledged the efforts of the federal government but called for greater focus on tackling insecurity, poverty, and hunger. “No nation is without crime, but government must not allow criminality to thrive. When people can afford food and live decently, peace will naturally follow,” he said.
Despite his criticisms, Shekarau remains optimistic. He affirmed his commitment to supporting any government that works for the peace and welfare of the people, regardless of political differences. “I am optimistic and will continue to support any government that works for the peace and welfare of our people, regardless of political differences,” he concluded.
