The Rise of Free AI Services in India

AI companies like OpenAI and Google are intensifying their competition to attract users by offering one-year free access to AI chatbots. This strategy is particularly evident in India, where the vast population and growing digital presence make it an attractive market for these tech giants.

OpenAI recently launched a one-year free service for its low-cost plan, “ChatGPT Go,” in India starting on the 4th. ChatGPT Go was introduced in India last August as a more affordable option compared to the existing paid model. The monthly subscription fee is 399 rupees (approximately 6,500 Korean won), which is significantly cheaper than the previous rate of 1,999 rupees. Despite the financial loss, OpenAI is providing this service for free in India. Indian residents can access the free service without needing a separate discount code.

Google and Perplexity are also offering free services in India. Last month, Google partnered with Reliance Jio, India’s largest telecommunications company, to provide Gemini AI for free. Subscribers to Jio’s unlimited 5G plan can use Google’s AI chatbot Gemini 2.5 Pro, image-generation AI NanoBana, video-generation AI Veo 3.1, and Notebook LM at no additional cost for 18 months. In July, Perplexity collaborated with Bharti Airtel, a competitor of Jio, to offer one year of free Perplexity Pro subscriptions to 360 million subscribers.

Why India?

The primary reason AI companies are rolling out free benefits in India is the country’s massive population. As of last year, India’s total population reached 1.45 billion, with approximately 900 million internet users. Most of these users are under 24 years old. From the perspective of AI companies, securing these users as loyal customers could generate substantial future revenue. Tarun Pathak, a researcher at Counterpoint Research, stated, “The plan (of OpenAI and others) is to get Indians hooked on generative AI before asking them to pay.”

The large population also serves as an advantage for data collection and testing. AI companies like OpenAI collect user behavior patterns and data to improve AI performance. The more people use AI chatbots, the more valuable data and AI-related statistics can be derived. The BBC noted, “India’s data consumption has surpassed many countries worldwide,” adding, “Global tech companies are gaining opportunities to train AI models by recruiting millions of new users in India.”

Regulatory Environment

India’s flexible regulatory environment is another factor driving the surge in free services. Currently, India has no AI-specific regulations. Although laws governing digital media and personal information have been proposed, they have not yet been enacted. This regulatory gap allows many AI companies to collaborate with telecom providers and offer free services for over a year.

Future Implications

As AI companies continue to expand their free offerings in India, the long-term implications for both users and the industry remain to be seen. With such a large and young user base, the potential for growth and innovation is immense. However, the challenge lies in transitioning these free users into paying customers while maintaining trust and engagement.
