TWMA’s 2025 Disability Disbursement Launch

Introduction to the Disability Fund Disbursement

The Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA) has taken a significant step in supporting individuals with disabilities by disbursing its first 2025 disability fund to ten beneficiaries. This initiative, carried out in collaboration with the municipal office of the Social Welfare Department, highlights the assembly’s commitment to inclusive development and the empowerment of people with special needs.

Details of the Disbursement

A total of GHs53,180 was distributed in cash and business items, including deep freezers, to the selected recipients. The disbursement marks the 11th in a series since the TWMA was established as an independent entity from the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA). This ongoing effort reflects the assembly’s dedication to improving the lives of those with disabilities through tangible support and resources.

The ten beneficiaries included eight children and two adults from various communities such as Boteyman, Lashibi, Spintex, Adjei Kojo, Baatsonaa, Kanewu, and Solomon City. Their inclusion underscores the assembly’s efforts to ensure that all segments of the population are considered in their welfare initiatives.

Leadership and Vision

Mr. Ludwig Teye Totimeh, the Tema West Municipal Chief Executive, emphasized the importance of this disbursement during the event where he presented the items and cash. He mentioned that the assembly received 487 applications, with 242 persons having been supported over the years through various means. This indicates a consistent effort to address the needs of the community.

Mr. Totimeh highlighted that the disbursement represents a significant improvement towards inclusive development. He revealed that, cumulatively, the assembly had disbursed GHs611,192 from 2018 to 2025. This figure showcases the long-term commitment of the assembly to supporting individuals with disabilities.

Allocation and Government Agenda

He explained that the disability fund constitutes three percent of the district assembly’s common fund. This allocation is part of the government’s resetting agenda aimed at empowering individuals with special abilities to achieve self-independence. Mr. Totimeh also announced that the percentage had been increased from three to five percent, reflecting a stronger commitment to this cause.

Encouragement and Accountability

The MCE encouraged the beneficiaries to use the disbursement wisely, cautioning against misuse without proper results and accountability. He stressed that misusing the funds could hinder future support for them and prevent others from accessing similar assistance. This emphasis on accountability is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the program and ensuring that it continues to benefit those in need.

Community Perspective

Mr. Charles Nartei, the Chairman for the Tema West persons with special abilities, shared his insights on the impact of the program. He noted that many individuals with disabilities within the municipality have benefited from various initiatives. According to him, applicants undergo a vetting process before being selected as beneficiaries, ensuring that the support reaches those who need it most.

Conclusion

The disbursement of the disability fund by the Tema West Municipal Assembly is a testament to the assembly’s commitment to inclusive development and the empowerment of people with disabilities. Through consistent efforts and strategic allocations, the assembly continues to make a positive impact on the lives of its residents. As the program evolves, it is essential to maintain transparency, accountability, and a focus on the long-term well-being of the community.
